A few weeks ago I became the owner of an old, small, Adana flatbed letter press. It came with a few sets of fonts, a sack of lead "leading" and a cardboard box full of "furniture" which is the bits of wood used to pack out the press bed. Over Thanksgiving weekend, as I scrambled with my daughter to put together a few lines of type for a project she wanted to bring back to college with her the next day, it became very clear that the sack and the box were not going to be the best way to store this stuff. After a trip to a craft store, I found some small boxes to store the stuff. I dumped the leading out of the sack and proceeded to sort the metal. From what I thought was randomly sized pieces of lead, I discovered that there were sets of leading cut to specific sizes. The mountain of lead has been transformed into a very useful assortment of leading that will be easy to access.
