Tonight the Book Arts Roundtable was supposed to meet and participants were supposed to exchange the folios they had created for the 2010 collaborative project, "LUNAR: It's a Paper Moon!" Due to a storm with high winds, lots of rain, and potential flooding, the decision was made at 5pm to reschedule the meeting for next Thursday, same time and place: The Baird Center in South Orange, NJ. I finished signing my set of 22 folios this afternoon and doing so set me to thinking about the process that got me to the finished pages. When I started working on my image I also had to think about how I would reproduce the folios. Being a printmaker I decided to go with the hand-pulled print process. I ruled out etching, (folded size is a 6" by 6" square so the plate would have to be at least 6" by 12") and opted to do a collagraph. My "trial" became the base of my image. I started with the inside spread and then decided I needed an image on the front page. Page four was to be left for a signature and not more than 15% imagery to stay within the rules of the project. I inked the collagraph plate like an etching, which required more time (and more ink) than simply rolling on the ink. Then somewhere along the way, I decided to weave some color into the circular, moon shape. I used some scraps from old print proofs and some of the paste papers I made this spring. I added in some "leafing" using aluminum leafing sheets for the silvery color. I added some words on the inside "moon" and made up a "word" for page three that shows through the small square window on the front page. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone else's pages.
